{"id":631,"date":"2023-10-18T12:46:00","date_gmt":"2023-10-18T11:46:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sense.hr\/blog\/?p=631"},"modified":"2025-09-27T07:36:05","modified_gmt":"2025-09-27T06:36:05","slug":"ai-and-hr","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/senseworkplace.com\/blog\/ai-and-hr\/","title":{"rendered":"AI and HR: A lesson from Suzanne Lucas on how to take advantage without landing in hot water"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>If the name Suzanne Lucas doesn\u2019t ring a bell, then I\u2019ll forgive you \u2013 in the HR circle, she\u2019s more affectionately known as \u201cThe Evil HR Lady\u201d, a persona many budding HR practitioners have enjoyed following since 2008.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And it\u2019s safe to say that she\u2019s a great persona for modern HR professionals to follow \u2013 after all, Suzanne\u2019s wisdom and experience with HR date right back to the 90\u2019s. Meaning she\u2019s seen HR evolve through the dot com boom, the dawn of the iPhone, the advent of browser-based HR software (SaaS), the COVID-19 pandemic and, now, in 2023, the sudden rise and influence of AI (Artificial Intelligence).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I was delighted to see that she has done what she\u2019s always been so good at \u2013 and dived right into understanding the impact of this new phenomenon, on the world of HR. And considering how Suzanne is now actually running an online course helping HR professionals to wrangle AI tools like ChatGPT more effectively, I decided to ask her a few questions and get a bit of advice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">AI is like a high school senior \u2013 it thinks it knows everything<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Suzanne\u2019s first description of AI in the world of HR made me laugh. Not surprising, considering <a href=\"https:\/\/www.evilhrlady.org\/improv-your-hr\">Suzanne also specialises in improv comedy<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cChatGPT AI is like a high school senior. It\u2019s convinced it knows everything and will make stuff up rather than admit it doesn\u2019t know something. So you need to double check everything.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Suzanne explained that AI tools like ChatGPT have such confidence that if you\u2019re not an expert, you might believe everything it says\u2026 So, while AI can certainly be helpful for HR, your starting point should be to not blindly believe everything a friendly chat bot tells you!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">AI is a highly-organised game-changer for HR<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>With this disclaimer out of the way, Suzanne admits that AI can be an incredible tool for HR professionals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c<em>ChatGPT can help you get started on projects, but you need to always remember that everything it produces is a rough draft<\/em>\u201d she says. \u201c<em>And for time-pressed HR practitioners who simply don\u2019t have enough hours in the day to prepare these things, that can be huge.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But she\u2019s quick to remind me that no matter how good AI is at churning out templates, letters, contracts and policies, it is not a replacement for the seasoned professional who has seen the ins and outs of countless HR scenarios \u2013 and who actually understands the real purpose, and legal implications, of the documents they\u2019re trying to create.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A starting point; not a decision-maker<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As such, HR should embrace the benefits of AI in assisting them with their workload. But it should see AI as a starting point, and not a decision maker. It should be used as a tool to draft, and not to finalise, a project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c<em>One of the stories I use in my online classes is that of the lawyer who tried to use ChatGPT to write a brief<\/em>\u201d, she says. \u201c<em>ChatGPT invented a case and the lawyers didn\u2019t notice. The judge did, and fined them $5000.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In other words, it\u2019s on you, the HR professional who actually understands your industry, to take the ideas and drafts that AI can deliver and then sculpt them into something solid and reliable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Will we see an increase in HR software with AI components?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>My conversation with Suzanne got me thinking about what HR professionals can expect in the years to come. And something that I expect to see a lot of, is companies attempting to integrate AI tools with their HR software.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Ami&#8221; is one such example of this, with SenseHR using GPT-4 technology to help HR professionals more easily sift through their databases to find answers to questions such as \u201cwho had most time off sick last month\u201d and \u201cwhat does the gender breakdown of my workforce look like\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The conversational nature of GPT-4 technology makes it easier for HR professionals to search for answers in their database in a more natural and human-like way, rather than wrestling with Boolean search strings and complex query builders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"\/ai.html\">You can learn more about Ami and the work being done by SenseHR here<\/a>.
